Fair Preview: Perspective

Both Nick and I have many fond memories growing up and exhibiting 4H projects and livestock at our local county fairs. We knew we wanted to provide this opportunity for our girls. Though only our oldest is in 4H, and her sister is eagerly awaiting her time to start next year, it has been a family effort to support them.
As we view this opportunity, our goal for our kids isn't to win the biggest banner, but to lay a foundation of character traits that will be foundational in their life.
Hard work and persistence are two things easily taught through this experience. We have proudly watched our farm girls rise early to ride their horses before the heat of the day, care for the livestock when it would be easier to stay in the AC, and diligently collect bugs for entomology projects.
Not all aspects are glamorous, and the work and pressures sometimes mount, but we believe its an experience worth pursuing for our kids.
As we enter fair week, we tell our kids that it's important to enjoy the fruits of their labor over the summer and compete to the best of their ability. But keep perspective. Most of all we want them to be a good friend and enjoy their time with their peers, lose and win with grace and humility, and treat everyone with love and respect.
Best wishes to all participating in their local fairs!
